Philadelphia Union

That Allen Chapman call has been named ASN’s Terrible Call of the Week: “The Philadelphia Union were minutes away from securing three points at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday when referee Allen Chapman whistled Maurice Edu for…something.”

Noting Chapman’s awarding of “a baffling penalty kick” was one of four “Match-deciding mistakes” across the league over the weekend, SBI says its time for the league to adopt video replays.

SI referred to Chapman’s call as a “phantom foul.” World Soccer Talk called it “a laugher” and “bogus.”

Cristian Maidana was named to SI’s Team of the WeekOnce a Metro’s did the same: “The Union almost won this week — arguably should have, since RSL’s late, equalizing penalty was a soft call — and it was largely thanks to Maidana’s ability to bring the worst out of some of RSL’s more reliable players.”

ASN included Fernando Aristeguieta among its Highlights of the week for serving notice that “his is a name MLS fans will have to learn to pronounce (Are-ees-tay-gee-tuh) with a brace in the Philadelphia Union’s entertaining 3-3 draw with Real Salt Lake.”

Aristeguieta got an honorable mention in MLSsoccer.com’s Team of the Week.

More power rankings! SI keeps the Union at No. 13: “A soft penalty against Maurice Edu might have robbed Philadelphia of its first win of the season, but a draw in Salt Lake is much better than the season-opening draw at home against the Rapids.”

Using a “network passing graph” as illustration, Matthew Doyle writes at MLSsoccer.com, “Forget the refs for a second, though, and try to focus on the disconnect between Philly’s central defense and central midfield. Maurice Edu and Vincent Nogueira are playing as a double pivot, which ended up leaving way, way too much space between the lines and forced a ton of emergency defense.”

Looking ahead to Friday’s home game against Dallas, Dave Zeitlin notes in the latest Inside Doop, given the series of controversial calls that have cost the Union four points over the first two games, “you can sense the coaches, players and fans are angry.” He then wonders, “But will that turn into a healthy kind of motivation as the team looks to win its first game of the season? Or will they play like a black cloud is hovering over them and expect things to go wrong?”

Friday’s game against Dallas will be broadcast nationally on UniMás, the Spanish language channel. At the Union website, instructions on how to watch the game in English on a variety of providers.

The Union returned to practice on Monday after returning from Salt Lake on the redeye early Sunday morning and they did so on on the club’s new practice field next to PPL Park. The club released a video with reactions to the team training on the field for the first time ever from John McCarthy, Antoine Hoppenot, and Michael Lahoud.

Former Swarthmore, Union, and City Islander Morgan Langley, who recently joined League of Ireland side St. Patrick’s Athletics, gives the Irish Mirror a geography lesson on Pennsylvania: “On the east side of Pennsylvania there’s Philadelphia, on the west side there’s Pittsburg – Harrisburg is the capital and it’s right in the middle. It’s not a place you want to go. We play on an island in the middle of the river and that’s why it’s the ‘City Islanders’.”

Langley also said of his former team, “They’ve to change their stadium otherwise they’ll get kicked out of the league.”

MLS

The league and NASL side Minnesota United have confirmed they are in “advanced discussions” about awarding the team the next expansion franchise.

Minnesota Vikings owner/president Mark Wilf acknowledged in a statement that his rival bid group has “been informed by Major League Soccer of its plans to pursue an outdoor stadium in Minneapolis,” rather than the $1 billion enclosed stadium currently under construction for the Vikings.

MLS commissioner Don Garber also said in a statement, “Over the course of 2015, we plan to evaluate potential expansion beyond 24 clubs.” ProSoccerTalk has an interesting consideration of a three conference, 30 team MLS.

Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk says the Minnesota United bid should not expect state funding of the proposed $150 million stadium. “The league ran into this problem in Miami. They gave a franchise out two years ago, and they don’t have a field to play on. So I don’t know if they’re going to make that mistake twice or if this group of owners is going to figure out how to finance a $150 million soccer stadium or not.” More Bakk’s comments at InForum.

MPR notes Bakk’s comments don’t rule out the possibility of county and city funding for the proposed stadium.

Signs the apocalypse is upon us? No such luck.

In other news…..MLS officiating is poor but they get to drive their cars still.

    • Yes, when we ask MLS/PRO to fire these refs, that is not what we mean (I hope).

    • Thats why the world needs a Darth Vader right now……..more than ever……..a heavy hand that makes people behave………peace through fear!

      • I quote “Big” Phil Scolari: “Pinochet may have been cruel sometime…..but everyone could read in Chile”!……………..poetry!

      • I thought we were Darth Vader- at least through the lens of others.

      • nope….they were the good ole days bro! I wish! The world is a much safer place when we employ the heavy hand!

  2. Give em hell Bhutan!!!

  3. If the league expands to, gasp….30 teams in three divisions – something is going to have to give. Maybe a Support Shield for winner of each division. Maybe another chance or two for in-league tournaments. Something. One winner standing at the top is so American.
    .
I have an idea, let’s expand to 50 teams- all in the top tier. yeah, that’s a good idea.
    .
or maybe 40 teams with that dreaded of all ideas…. promotion and relegation.

    • 24 teams…….you need to start having the P & R words join the conversation……otherwise….along with the officiating, our league becomes an even bigger joke……

    • well, we do give out trophies for 1st to 10th place these days……..fits right in.

    • 40 teams, 20 East and 20 West, but they are separate leagues that don’t actually play each other.
North America is just too damn big.

      • I think Brazil does something like this….don’t they have a state and national title?

  4. Nice professionalism there from Langley–immediately trashing the city of the club he just got transferred from. I’m glad he didn’t stick with the Union. Everything I’ve ever heard him quoted as saying sounded bitter and entitled.

  5. OneManWolfpack says:

So I just got Fios and I have no complaints except I can’t get UniMas to do the SAP feed. Anyone else having trouble? I read on MLS.com that UniMas is having issues supporting the SAP feed, and I can’t imagine why MLS would promote a nationally televised weekly game on a Spanish network without first making sure the SAP feed ACTUALLY WORKS… but then again it’s MLS so it makes perfect sense.
    .
Anyway, anyone know any tricks or if it’s confirmed Fios doesn’t have the SAP?
    .
And never mind, I answered my own question. It says Verizon isn’t supporting SAP yet. Well, my original rant still stands… why do this if its not set up to work. Makes no sense.

    • FormerSeasonTicketHolder says:

I have the same problem with Comcast. Luckily my wife speaks fluent Spanish so she just fills me in when I get lost in the broadcast.

      • Do you pay her for that service? Seems she could hold out for a pretty penny. Contract renegotiation?

    • I’m confused as well. I have Verizon at home and watched the LA/Fire match on UniMas with English commentary. But when I tried to watch the Hou/Orlando match at a friend’s house, it didn’t work…they also have Verizon. I don’t remember seeing anything that said Verizon doesn’t support SAP during week 1, but sure enough it said as much during week 2. The answer I got from Verizon and UniMas? “Please follow the instructions in this link” (the MLS page saying SAP isn’t supported.

    • I’ve been unable to get it to work with Comcast either. I just assume things won’t work with them, so I’m actually surprised to hear of the same problem with other providers.

      • I have the same problem the SAP function not working with Dish. My receiver/DVR is pretty old, but the instructions indicate it should work. Hasn’t yet. I can get it in English using the online stream.

  6. OneManWolfpack says:

I’m guessing there is no way Comcast or local is carrying the game… because it’s exclusively on UniMas nationally, right?

    • Seems not. I have Verizon and SAP isn’t offered on UNIMAS, through Verizon. So I’m going to have to watch the match in Spanish. Smart move MLS, smart move. Take the game away from fans who really want to see it, and give to potential fans. Just lovely.

    • Damn. I was so happy till I saw loan. Boo!

    • I think Danny is a very nice young man and terrific amassador for the team and game. I just don’t think he belongs in MLS anymore. The skill level (at least on this team) has passed him by pretty quickly. The “engine” people admire most about him is underpowered and it doesn’t increase the team’s level of play (exact opposite actually).
