Philadelphians Abroad: Allison thrives, Cochrane starts, Richter earns first MLS minutes, Hernandez creates game winner

Junior Lone Star FC and Overbrook High alumnus Anthony Allison started the season right for Umeå FC of the Swedish Division 1, putting up a Man-of-the-Match performance in Saturday’s league-opening 2-0 win over IK Frej Taby. Allison contributed to the opening score when his through pass split the IK Frej defense to allow teammate Linus Christensen to pass the ball into the net in the 8th minute. Allison would put the game away in the 33rd minute when a pass from teammate Lamin Sillah would find him with only the goalkeeper to beat. Allison easily slotted the ball to the left corner of the goalkeeper to give his team their first away win of the season.

If you’ve been reading our Philadelphians Abroad column, you’ll know that scoring in Sweden is nothing new to Allison, this goal being his 44th in three seasons in the Scandinavian nation.

In other news, Holland, PA-native Greg Cochrane earned his first start with the L.A. Galaxy in the team’s 1-0 loss to FC Dallas on Saturday. Cochrane replaced first choice left back Todd Dunivant, who had started the first eight games of 2013, in the lineup after Dunivant picked up a knock in last week’s CONCACAF Champions League semifinal loss in Monterrey. Cochrane was the one bright spot in an otherwise unimpressive match for the Galaxy, notching an impressive seven clearances as well as an interception and blocked cross. The rookie was also effective in containing LA’s Brazilian winger Jackson who struggled against the Galaxy, despite his recent run of good form for the league leading FC Dallas. Cochrane was selected 38th overall by Los Angeles in the MLS SuperDraft in January.

If you were at PPL Park on Saturday, you saw Southampton, Pa. native Ryan Richter making his MLS debut. Richter, who entered the match in the seventh minute, was a standout at La Salle before being signed by the Union in 2011. He had no league appearances before being released by his hometown club and signing with Charleston Battery for the 2012 season. Richter trialed at DC United and then Toronto before signing with the Canadian club in March.

Finally, Philadelphia Union Home Grown Player Cristhian Hernandez made the score sheet for the Harrisburg City Islanders in their league opener against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. With the two teams tied late in the game at 1-1, Hernandez provided the assist to teammate Lucky Mkosana’s extra time winner.
