The Philadelphia Union announced on Tuesday morning the signing of Harrisburg native and Harrisburg City Islanders Academy product Alex Mendoza.
A dual US and Mexican citizen, Mendoza spent the last three seasons with Liga MX club UNAM Pumas. According to the press release from the Union, after joining Pumas in 2009, Mendoza played in the team’s first and second division teams, as well as the U-20 team, in 2009-10. From 2011, Mendoza was with the team’s second division side Pumas Morelos, which competes in Mexico’s Ascenso MX league.
A graduate of Red Land High School in Lewisberry, Pa., Mendoza was part of the U-13 and U-17 Olympic Development Program player pools.
The announcement says, “The midfielder will be eligible to play for the Union upon receipt of his ITC. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.”
