Philadelphians Abroad: Gaudette starts for Red Bulls

Usually we use this column to write about the success of local players in finding the back of the net. But with this week’s dearth of goals from the locals, it seemed only fitting to spend some time on an area native who found his way in goal this week.

Fresh off of a trade from the Los Angeles Galaxy, Hummelstown native Bill Gaudette made his first start in a New York Red Bulls jersey after coming over in a trade from Los Angeles. Standing in for rookie keeper Ryan Meara, Gaudette staked his claim for the second string goalkeepers’ spot ahead of fellow Philly local Jeremy Vuolo, and for good reason.

After being selected by the Columbus Crew in 2005 and making 17 appearances with the team, Guadette cut his teeth at the lower levels of the American soccer pyramid. Gaudette put in time with the Puerto Rico Islanders, with whom he earn USL First Divison Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2008, and the Montreal Impact immediately prior to their MLS jump, before coming on board with the Galaxy at the start of this season.

Guadette made three appearances with L.A. while starting goalkeeper Josh Saunders was out due to injury. In March, Gaudette earned his first cap with the Puerto Rican national team in a friendly against Nicaragua. After putting in a strong start with New York with some highlight reel saves behind a porous back line, Bill Gaudette has shown he will be an able backstop in Meara’s absence and has the chops to challenge the team’s starting role.
