Player of the Week: J.T. Noone

This one was a tough one.

You had Josue Martinez running rampant over an outmatched Rochester Rhinos squad playing its fourth game in eight days.

There was Corey Hertzog producing two goals and an assist to lead the USL’s Wilmington Hammerheads to a 3-1 win in his debut on loan from the Red Bulls.

Reading United’s Deshorn Brown scored a brace in four minutes in the win over Baltimore Bohemians.

Philadelphia Fever’s Myriam Bouchard scored her second goal in four games — from her center back position.

We even had a vote for “unnamed source,” the favored source of a particular Union fan blog.

But sorry, we had to go for the guy from Harrisburg.

How do you play 90 minutes without a goal, let in three to a shorthanded New England team in 15 minutes, and then score three of your own in the next 15?

We still don’t know.

But we know Noone slammed home the game-tying goal from 22 yards out in the 120th minute to key the most improbable of comebacks for the Harrisburg City Islanders, who subsequently won in penalty kicks. It capped a terrific stretch of games for Noone, who had assisted on a game-winning goal just days earlier.

Noone, a Temple alum who grew up in the Harrisburg area, has been big for the City Islanders all season. Every game, it’s as if he’s sending a message to MLS clubs (like the Union, who signed and cut him) that he can play at the highest level. Against New England, he showed it, coming up big in the end. Yes, he didn’t net his penalty kick. If he had, maybe we wouldn’t have even mentioned those other people above.

But you don’t make a play like that in a game like that and not get the props for it. So today, Noone is PSP’s Philadelphia Player of the Week.

And tonight, he and his teammates will see how many times lightning can strike when Harrisburg hosts the New York Red Bulls in the fourth round of the US Open Cup. Can they pull off another upset?

Honorable mention

As noted above, Martinez, Bouchard, Brown and Hertzog were all mentioned in the voting. And yes, “unnamed source” got a vote. Seriously. We have no rules on this. And well, a certain somebody has a rather infamous sense of humor …

PS: Got photos of Noone or other players from Harrisburg, Reading and other local teams? We’ve run short. Add them to PSP’s Flickr feed, and we’ll feature them on PSP with credit to you as photographer.
