PPL Park to host 2012 All-Star Game on July 25

It’s official, PPL Park will be the site of the 2012 MLS All-Star Game on July 25.

The opponent, “a renowned international club,” will be announced at a later date.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber, Philadelphia Union CEO Nick Sackiewicz, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Chester Mayor John Linder were on hand at the press conference at Philadelphia’s City Hall on Tuesday morning for the announcement.

The game will follow three days of of festivities and will be broadcast live at 8pm on ESPN2, Galavision or Telefutura, and in Canada on TSN and RDS.

Garber said in a press release, “Philadelphia has become a destination for hosting major soccer events in recent years and we are pleased to bring the 2012 AT & T MLS All-Star Game to a region with incredibly passionate soccer supporters. The Sons of Ben and the rest of the Union fans will provide an enthusiastic home-field advantage at PPL Park, and we look forward to celebrating our sport with this vibrant soccer community.”

The All-Star game will be played on the day before the opening of the Olympic soccer tournament. How that will affect player selection remains to be seen.
