Ocean City FC, formerly known as the Ocean City Barons, plays in the United Soccer Leagues’ Premier Development League. If you’re not familiar with the PDL, it’s the same league that also hosts Philadelphia Union’s affiliate, Reading United AC. Many players from this mostly amateur league go on to play professionally.
As for Ocean City, the New Jersey-based club had a big season last year, reaching the third round of the U.S. Open Cup before losing 2-0 to D.C. United of Major League Soccer. Former OC players in the pros include Jeremiah White, who has appeared for the U.S. National Team, and defenders Tony Donatelli and Ryan Heins, who play for the Montreal Impact and Rochester Rhinos, respectively, in the USSF second division. Their starting goalie from last season, Tunde Ogunbiyi, is currently training with Reading FC in England.
Ocean City’s season opens May 15 and runs through early August.
