Deconstructing the Union mythos

Philadelphia Union need to drop the tough guy act. This is soccer, not hockey or American football. The discipline and beauty of soccer calls for a scalpel as a opposed to the precision of a machete. Aggression is certainly needed but in a highly controlled manner.

Cheer up, a new soccer shop is in town!

Scarves and hats at Covent Garden

With the very real possibility of a strike threatening to overshadow Philadelphia’s triumphant return to the top flight of American soccer, the PSP looks for something positive in the city’s soccer scene and finds it in a new soccer gift shop on Head House Square.

On Spirituality and Football

The BBC World Service recently ran a segment concerning the confluence of faith and football. It was interesting in that it depicted how nuanced and sophisticated, as well as deeply entrenched, one’s spiritual beliefs can be with their sporting life in the beautiful game. The discussion ran the gambit from small town English clubs that [...]

All Ugly World XI 2010

AUXIpics After reading about 4,237 different best XI of the decade lists, I thought I’d switch it up a bit.  I wanted to consider not just the most gifted players of the Premier League or La Liga or Serie A, etc. but rather the most talented footballers who also possess the uncanny ability to make [...]

Very Nice, Readers!

Soccer fans everywhere anxiously await the second half of the season. January arrives with a new transfer window: a month-long binge in the footy speak-easy, where clubs gamble on high-priced additions who are all described as The Missing Piece (did Afonso Alves really cost Middlesbrough over 10 million pounds?). It’s also a chance for smaller [...]

Legal Handballs

Last week, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger commented that throw-ins may be the wrong way to restart play from the sidelines. Wenger argues that the throw-in gives an unfair advantage to teams who feature long throwers, noting that soccer is a game played with the feet. The Arsenal manager somewhat obliquely suggested that eliminating the throw-in [...]

My Team of the Decade

The end of the decade brings with it a lot of really annoying end-of-the-decade lists.  Everyone from the Guardian to Soccernet to the guy from your indoor team is compiling their world football team of the decade.  While these carefully selected lists include some of the greatest players ever to lace up boots, they don’t [...]

Robbers use football to cover-up heist

Robbers use football to cover-up heist

Brazilian police suspect robbers waited until Sunday, the last day of the Brazilian football season, to pull off a daring robbery of a cash delivery firm. It is thought that the robbers rented a nearby house (posing as residents, even putting up a Christmas tree) and tunneled 490 feet to complete the caper in which [...]

Adidas World Cup Uniforms are Tight

via examiner.com Honey, does this shirt make me look invisible? Sorry for bringing up France/Ireland again, but here is the official Adidas press release about those skintight jerseys France wore when Henry basketball dribbled around the Irish and threw William Gallas an alley-oop dunk. The TECHFIT will be the official World Cup jerseys for Adidas-sponsored [...]

Anybody buying; anybody selling…Anybody ready to pick their seats?

The team has targeted a mid-December start date to begin the seat selection process. Preceding this process will be the roll-out of their [...]
