Last night the Union smoked Montreal, 5-0, in preseason. Even Jay Simpson scored. Hmm, he must be scoffing something down healthy from the Dunkin’ Donuts menu.

Still no word on Borek Dockal signing with the Union. You’re our last Czech hope, Obi Dockal!

ICYMI, PSP’s Nick Fishman spoke with Czech reporters on Dockal.

SBI previews the Union’s season.

Some recent Union youth results:

Local

In Wednesday’s installment of the long-running repetitive soccer serial A Tale of Two Halves, Penn FC won the first half 1-0 and the Bethlehem Steel won the second 5-1. The bulk of the Steel’s minutes. 525 of the game’s 990, went to Academy players, as both Penn and the Steel withheld key veterans.

Penn State hired goalkeeper coach Tunde Ogunbiyi, who in a past life worked with the Union’s youth academy teams.

Brian Gill to be head coach of men’s soccer coach at the University of Pennsylvania. Curtin and Hackworth speak highly of Gill.

MLS

The Crew want to move to Austin – but does Austin want the Crew?

NYCFC signed midfielder Ebenezer Ofori from VfB Stuttgart, and Brad Evans is off to Sporting KC.

The Red Bulls name Luis Robles captain. He still sucks.

An Italian newspaper ranked top 98 players born 1998 and later. Includes two MLS players (Pulisic is #2).

NWSL

The NWSL released their schedule. Somebody obsessed over it.

US Soccer

Jill Ellis made a tenth of what Jurgen Klinsmann raked in. I guess winning a World Cup doesn’t count for much.

Around the globe

Steve Nash may become a soccer broadcaster. Huh?

Leicester City to pay £3M to settle Financial Fair Play dispute.

No FA action against Liverpool’s Firmino over Everton’s Holgate spat.

Court rules Bundesliga clubs should pay police costs.

In CONCACAF action, Tauro beat FC Dallas 1-0, and Club America smashed Deportivo Saprissa, 5-1. The highlight in the latter match probably being ref Mark Geiger taking a cell phone from a keeper — apparently a fan threw it on the field.

Highlight of the day

ManU’s de Gea once again saves the day.

Czech report citing Borek Dockal’s 3 year contract is $3.8M/year – do not see @philaunion covering that full amount. Report also notes Dockal’s family (pregnant wife, 4 year son) did not like life in China.

  2. I actually like the Nash hiring for TNT. First off he loves soccer and is part owner of two teams (Whitecaps and Mallorca) and has a family heavily involved in the sport.
    .
On top of that, it brings some crossover from NBA (where a lot of players are also soccer fans). As long as he can hold his own on the commenting side, I could see this going pretty well for him and TNT.

    • I agree completely. If he is charismatic in the booth, it can only be good for the sport. One of the main things that soccer needs is broader acceptance from fans of other sports. Having a player of Nash’s caliber contribute can only be a benefit.

    • Steve Nash is fantastic. Eager to see how we works out for the Champions League.
