News roundup: Union gelling, preparing for first midweek game

Philadelphia Union

Grades and analysis from Philly Voice’s Kevin Kinkead from this weekend’s game. I love the clip he posted of Medunjanin playing defense. It’s a very similar play to the one that Piatti scored on a few weeks ago. This time, Medunjanin hustles back on D, gets between the player and the defense, and makes the play. It’s amazing the difference one player can make, and the difference between “5 defensive actions” Haris and “18 defensive actions” Haris is notable on the field and on the scoreboard.

The Bedoya-Medunjanin connection is starting to gel. It’s up to Earnie and Co. to find a good attacking midfielder starting with W so we can have a BMW driving the midfield.

Gaddis credits his family’s military background for his success.

The defense has been getting better all season.

Ilsinho was successful in his first game at the #10 spot.

Takeaways from Curtin’s press conference, held a day early due to the two game week.

  1. I don’t know if this is the proper place to point this out, but last week’s footy on the telly column is still pinned to the top of the recent posts list instead of this week’s

    Hahahahaha!

Hee…. Welp, Adam just earned half my Internet gold. Just think of the lucrative tie-ins! Well played, sir. Well played.
    .
A CAM surnamed “B…,” however, would hew too close to the current sponsors on our shirts …!

I don’t claim to be well-versed in international players, so I have to rely on what I read. And based on the list of 10 players that may be available this summer, Oscar Trejo sounds ideal. A hard-working #10 who is willing to do the dirty work in the midfield, and has skill.

“excellent dribbler and final third passer”
    .
“likes to operate as a roaming No. 10”
    .
    “shoots well from distance”
    .
    “takes a decent free kick”
    .
“happily gets stuck in to win balls back in midfield – it’s not often that an attacker finishes top 20 in tackles per game in a high-level league”
    .
Can someone give this guy a call, please? That description, if accurate, is EXACTLY what we have been clamoring to see here.

      You mean he’s Philly Tough?
      .
Oh shit did I just say that.

      • pragmatist says:

I was trying to avoid that and highlight his playmaking ability (according to the article). As well as his willingness to play defense, since that is imperative here.
        .
Walking away from the PT line. Let’s just pretend like that phrase never existed…

      • lol, kudos

    • Interesting to see Rubio Rubin on that list…second time this week I’ve seen his name… |read| Someone needs to look into rumors.

      • pragmatist says:

Rubin has popped up on the rumor mills for the past year or 2. He’s just not settling in Europe, which seems mostly due to injuries and bad luck. I’m guessing it’s just a matter of time for him.
        .
I was a bit surprised that AJ wasn’t on the list. But maybe that was in the category of, “Yeah, everyone already knows he wants to come over.”

  4. I like BMW, but how about a CAM that begins with C? Run B-M-C. Anyone? Make it our own, a trademark midfield trio to run this jawns. MLS Cup or bust.

  5. Trusty officially on the U-20 World Cup roster now.

Ahhh…The Bone Saw. Still a source of laughter in my house.
