West Chester United beat Lone Star FC 3-1 in their first NPSL meeting.

MLS

A recap of this weekend’s MLS action.

The MLS has a plan to improve TV ratings, and it’s underwhelming. One thing not covered in the article is that TV ratings as a whole are dropping as people watch less TV, and the NFL and NBA have suffered similar drops this season. Basically, looking at TV ratings at a time when TV ratings as a whole are plummeting and even ESPN is cutting significant staff is a bad way to measure fan interest.

Toronto won again, extending their winning streak to a notable 6 games.

European teams are making bids for Cyle Larin, but it’s not clear that he’ll be sold.

  3. The MLS TV ratings plan is pretty lame. I’ll leave it at that. I wonder about TV ratings in general. It would seem to me that streaming should allow for an even more accurate account of exactly what people are watching and when, but maybe these companies don’t have reliable analytics for that. Sports suffer more than most other programming from bizarre restrictions and limited availability — self inflicted wounds, really. But MLS might want to start with the simple fact that it’s generally easier for me to watch the Premier League than it is to watch MLS. (Though to be fair, MLS offerings from ESPN and FS1 get better every year.).

    • I agree that TV Ratings in general are headed down as people migrate to streaming.

Personally, as a cable cord-cutter, I would jump at a new tier to MLS Live that is not subject to Black Outs. Yes MLS, I would gladly pay more money to be able to stream when the game is on ESPN or FS1.
