Philadelphia Union announced on Monday the signing of 2015 SuperDraft pick Dzenan Catic.

“I’m very thankful for the opportunity to join Philadelphia Union and I look forward to contributing any way necessary,” the forward said in a press release. “It’s a dream come true to play professionally and I will continue to work with my teammates to become a better player day-in and day-out.”

Selected in the second round of the draft, No. 31 overall, Catic was the 2014 NAIA Player of the Year, scoring 39 goals with 11 assists for Davenport University.

Originally from Bosnia, Catic played his high school ball at East Kentwood in Michigan, where he earned multiple accolades including three State Championships, three All-State awards, and was named an All-American his senior year. Most notably, he earned national player of the year honors during his senior season.

Upon graduation, Catic decided to sign with German side Kaiserslautern. He remained for two years, making six appearances for FCK’s reserve team before his release.

“We were surprised to have the opportunity to draft Dzenan in the second round and he’s continued to show his potential as a player since he’s been in camp,” technical director Chris Albright said. “He has a goalscorer’s instincts and he will continue to improve while adding depth up front.”

  1. After so many wasted draft picks (and yes,the draft has worse odds than a crapshoot) it’s nice to see someone stick around and make the cut. Now, if they could have found a LB…

    • Lee may still make the team (or at least go to Harrisburg) as a LB project. They’ll be fine with Williams and Gaddis. That’s the least of their concerns in my opinion.

  2. Can somebody phonetically tell me how to pronounce his name?

  3. Who’s the older guy in the picture?

  4. This guy has had a very interesting path to MLS, and I think it’s pretty cool that he’s made the cut. I haven’t really seen him play yet, but Curtin seems to like him a lot, and his college goalscoring record is pretty ridiculous even if it was just NAIA. Hard to tell whether he stays with the big club as an option off the bench or goes off on loan to Harrisburg to get regular playing time – wouldn’t be surprised to see a combination of both. Welcome to Philly, Dzenan!

  5. I see this guy in five years being a leading gol scorer, hopefully still for the club. Just a hunch.
