District 12 Boys Soccer: Week One

Shane Kelley Memorial Soccer Showcase

Come watch some of the best teams in the area September 13, 2014 at Northeast High School. Franklin Towne Charter Girls takes on Springside Chestnut Hill Academy Girls at 11, FTC boys play at 1 against Washington High School. Next up Archbishop Ryan takes on Northeast,  a very competitive game. La Salle CHS takes on Holy Ghost Prep (2013 2A State Champs!), and the last game at 7pm is Central versus Father Judge, in a rematch of last years City Championship.

It’s five bucks for an adult, three for students and children. The proceeds go to creating scholarships for city soccer players. The showcase commemorates Shane Kelly, a Frankford High School team captain, and multi-year city champion, who was killed in the city during a street robbery in 2011.

Non-League Results

August 29, 2014: La Salle and Central hammered their way to a 0-0 draw. In PIAA non-playoff games, this means two sudden-death ten minute overtimes. Archbishop Wood, ranked number two in Southeast Pennsylvania by the Inquirer, beat North Penn 3-1.

August 30, 2014: Roman played Truman down the shore and won, 3-0. Father Judge faced Pennsbury with a 0-0 result.

September 2, 2014: Judge beat Holy Ghost 2-1. Holy Ghost won the state 2A championship last year. La Salle played against the George School and won definitively, 6-0. Central played MaST and won 7-0. Garneel Azor scored this long distance strike.

Archbishop Wood beat Cheltenham 2-0, scoring the game winner on a corner, something a high school coach always likes to see. Conwell-Egan beat Abington Friends 7-1, while Cardinal O’Hara beat Friends Central 3-2. For other friendly results check philly.com.

Public League B

September 3, 2014: The relegated side Frankford beat the promoted side Kensington in a Frankford Avenue end-to-end game, 5-2. Frankford coach Rob Shelton said, “[I] just want to give kudos to Jim Hardy [the] coach for Kensington. Players on both Frankford and Kensington have played on teams in the Kensington Soccer Club that Jim has worked hard on developing and maintaining . . . The score could have easily been 5-5 if not for three great saves by Frankford GK Kyle Beltle.”

Benjamin Franklin, the other side promoted from C Division, housed the other team relegated from A Division, Masterman, 6-1. Masterman’s goalie, Andrew Seibert made a number of saves to keep Masterman in the game, but eventually Benjamin Franklin’s superior skill won out. Seibert ended the game with fifteen saves. Look out, Tim Howard.

Furness asserted its mastery beating Boys Latin 7-0. Sophomore Jose Mendez, new to the team, scored 4 goals. Freshman Ricardo Macias scored his first career goal. The defense as a whole allowed only one shot on goal.

Public League A

September 4, 2014: League play opened. Northeast handled Palumbo 8-0. Washington beat Fels 5-1, while Philadelphia Academy Charter beat Olney 1-0.

Franklin Towne Charter saw their goalie Josh Gilborges make seven saves against Prep Charter. FTC found two late goals to win 2-0.

Central worked hard to break down Bartram. Bartram had no substitutes but fought hard. Central broke through thirty minutes in on an ugly hustle goal from freshman Phillip Vasserman. All the goals count the same though, and Central finished 4-1.

In the shadow of Citizen Bank Park, Southern faced Lincoln at the South Philly Supersite. Senior striker Basanta Lamichhane dominated the game scoring four straight, including two from the penalty spot. Lincoln fought back to 6-3. However, Lincoln had no subs and heat and fatigue caught up to with the team.

Catholic League

September 4, 2014: The opening day of play had some expected results, as Judge handled McDevitt 9-0 and La Salle beat O’Hara 10-1. Lansdale beat Bonner-Prendergast 2-0. St. Joe’s and Carroll postponed their game.

Conwell-Egan fought it out with Roman.Roman possessed and moved the ball, with the Eagles staunchly defending. Roman’s Brandon Gutekunst scored at fifty minutes, but Conwell-Egan’s Vito LoDuca equalized at the 70th minute mark. Neither team found a goal in overtime. Coach Barry Roxberry reports that this is the first time in his career that CEC has not lost to Roman.

Archbishop Wood, ranked No. 2 in the region by the Inquirer, beat Archbishop Ryan 2-0.
