Readers predictions on this MLS season

Philadelphia Union will make the playoffs this year.

At least, that’s what 96% of voters in this week’s poll said.

Most of you also predicted:

  • Sporting Kansas City would win the Eastern Conference,
  • Portland would win the West, and
  • Maurice Edu was the Union player most likely to make the All-Star team.

Here’s a bit more detail.

Union will finish third or fourth

Of those who voted — and yes, we had a smaller voting base this time because some genius (hi!) didn’t post the poll Monday morning like he was supposed to — most thought the team would finish in third or fourth place.

In fact, it was a full 75% that thought the team would place there. Here’s the breakdown.

  1. 1% of voters
  2. 9%
  3. 35%
  4. 39%
  5. 15%
  6. 4%
  7. 2%

  10. 1 troll picked the Union to finish last.
Edu best chance for All-Star, but …

A solid plurality of 38% of you felt Mo Edu had the best shot among Union players of making the All-Star team. But Amobi Okugo pulled a full quarter of your votes as well.

Here’s the rest of the breakdown.

  1. Edu: 38%
  2. Okugo: 25%
  3. Vincent Nogueira: 14%
  4. Sheanon Williams: 10%
  5. Jack McInerney: 9%
  6. Cristian Maidana: 2%
  7. Austin Berry: 1%
  8. Sebastien Le Toux: 1%
Conference champ predictions

A whopping 72% of you think Kansas City is the class of the East. No team other than New York (17%) drew more than 5% of the vote. Three of you think Montreal or Columbus will win the conference.

Meanwhile 51% of voters think Portland will take the West. Los Angeles drew a respectable 24% of the vote, while Seattle drew 19% and Salt Lake got 4%. Someone also trolled the vote and predicted Chivas USA would win. (Probably the same optimist who picked the Union for last place.)

We’ll try to do these polls on a more regular basis this season, maybe once a month or if readers demand it, once every week or two. (So if you have an opinion on how often we should do them, please email me or let us know in the Comments section.)

  1. See, on PSP even trolls get a vote!

  2. Really surprised people think Columbus will win the conference. They haven’t really replaced Eddie Gaven and they weren’t all that strong to start with. Michael Parkhurst is like the only major addition I can think of, and I just don’t see them as having enough to mount anything more than a weak attempt at playoff contention this year.
