He may have played his college soccer at a small Division III college, but now he has a fighting chance to make the Philadelphia Union’s roster this season.

In the latest installment of the Philly Soccer Show, Union 2014 draft pick Richie Marquez joins KYW’s Greg Orlandini and PSP’s Eli Pearlman-Storch to talk about competing for a starting spot on the Union’s defense after the departure of Jeff Parke to DC United.

Greg and Eli then look at the Union, now that they have their first scrimmage under their belt, a 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution that was played over three 30-minute periods. Each period featured a different starting lineup as the Union tries to work in all of the new faces in camp this year.

Greg and Eli also discuss some US National Team players as they gear up for this year’s World Cup.

If the union are thinking of changing players positions….why not move sheanon inside, start gaddis sheanon okugo and fabinho?

    • Eli Pearlman-Storch says:

I just don’t see the merits of wasting Sheanon out of position. He can hold down a CB spot for a game or two, but even then, only just. He’s shorter than 5’10” and absolutely excels as a RB. The reason I threw Brian Carroll out there is because there are better players at his position and his career is winding down. A guy with his experience and positional sense could adapt quickly to CB.

      • Williams should never be anything more than an emergency option as a CB. He does a good enough job there as emergency cover, but I’m not convinced he’s anything more than an average (at best) player at that position.

Putting Carroll at CB is something I’m somewhat lukewarm on, but I think at this point in his career, he’s more useful as a backup option in defensive midfield.

  2. Package Cruz, Keon and Carroll to any one for a salary dump. Then use the younger players for backups and the freed up money on a CB.

  3. Carroll at CB would be rough. Just not physical enough to compete with some of MLS’ bigger target forwards. If he stays in the starting XI it has to be as a CDM. The points about Pfeffer and Ribeiro were solid, but will either be 100% MLS ready from day 1? I’d put money down on Pfeffer if I had to pick between the two. Hoepfully Cope and Marquez are as physical as they were touted to be. I don’t think an Okugo-White pairing is necessarily more successful by virtue of White’s previous MLS experience.

Any thoughts on tossing Bone in the midfield in front of Edu and Nogueira? With Letoux and Maidana out on the wings?

    • That’d be Bone’s best position. But I haven’t seen anything in his career that would suggest he’d be good there. In Chicago, he had a lot of competition for AM minutes, but he never really did anything to show he belonged on the field. If he shows well in training and earns a spot, I’m fine with it, but I don’t think we should be counting on him for more than backup minutes.

      • Eli Pearlman-Storch says:

I was kicking around Carroll at CB just as an idea. There are plenty of holes in it, I admit. But it’s an interesting discussion. And no, neither Pfeffer nor Ribeiro will be 100% ready at the beginning of the year, but with a platform of Edu and Nogeuira, wide support from Maidana and Le Toux and the smart running from McInerney, what better way to learn? At some point, one of these youngsters needs an extended chance in the lineup. Why not now? As for Bone, he certainly can compete with those other two, but considering how little time he’s played since he’s come into the league, I’m lukewarm on the chance of him being the player the Union need.

  4. Technical question, but why isn’t this episode of the podcast showing up/downloading automatically on my iPhone?
    .
Also, regarding the previous episode with Andre Blake, the date was listed as December 31, 2000, so I had to go back and manually download it as an “old episode”.
