Union youth at the US Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase

While the Union Academy U-13/14s have been on break since the end of November, the U-15/16s and U-17/18s schedule included three games at the US Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. last week before the start of their winter break. Here’s a look at how the two teams did.

U-15/16s

On Thursday, Dec. 12, the U-15/16s faced their Chivas USA counterparts. After going down a goal in the 17th minute, Chris Gomez equalized for the Union in the 40th minute. Robert Campbell put the Union up in the 61st minute but a Chivas goal in the 80th was enough for the game to finish in a 2-2 draw.

Union Academy goalkeeper Andrew Verdi, defender Matthew Real, and forward Isiah Young did not appear in the opening game, which kicked off at 3:30 pm, because they were on the US Development Academy U-15/16 Red Select Team that faced the Blue Select Team at 6 pm. The Red Team lost that contest, 2-0.

Next up on Friday was the Capital Area RailHawks Academy-CASL U-15/16′s. A lovely free kick goal from Morgan Hackworth in the 32nd minute was capped by a goal from Isiah Young in the 78th minute forĀ  the 2-0 win.

Here’s a look at that Morgan Hackworth free kick goal courtesy of TopDrawerSoccer. I’m not sure how much he (or the keeper) knew about it but a goal is a goal.

The final match of the showcase was against Real Salt Lake on Sunday, a 1-0 loss.

The Union Academy U-15/16s are currently in fourth place in the US Soccer Development Academy East Conference with a 7-4-2 record. In first place is PDA (11-2-0), in second place is PA Classics (9-1-2). Continental-FC Delco is in ninth place (3-6-3) in the 12 team conference.

U-17/18s

The Union U-17/18s began their showcase on Wednesday, Dec. 11 against the San Jose Earthquakes. A 35th minute goal saw San Jose take the lead, a lead that was doubled in the 60th minute from a Mohammed Conde own-goal. The Union got on the board with a tally from Matthew Greer in the 74th minute but the game ended as a 2-1 loss.

The Union U-17/18s next faced the Montreal Impact on Thursday. Montreal took the lead in the 37th minute before Neicko Williams equalized for the Union in the 58th minute. A Patrick Berneski goal gave the Blue and Gold the lead in the 69th minute but the Union conceded in the 90th minute for a 2-2 draw.

The Union wrapped up the showcase against the De Anza Force U-17/18s on Saturday. Mohammed Conde opened the scoring in the 21st minute before Carlos Delgadillo equalized in the 37th. The Union took the lead with a goal from Tyler Skwara in the 45th minute but a goal from Delgadillo in the 56th minute was enough for the 2-2 draw.

The Union Academy U-17/18s are currently in fifth place in the East Conference with a 4-3-6 record. PDA is in second place (10-2-1) and PA Classics is in fourth place (5-2-4). Continental FC Delco is in seventh place (4-7-2).

Play resumes in March

Play resumes for each of the Union Academy teams on March 1 against Continental FC Delco at The Proving Grounds in Conshohocken. The U-17/18s play at 10 am , the U-15/16s at 12:30 pm, and the U-13/14s play at 2 pm.
