KYW Philly Soccer Show: Draft, whither Freddy Adu?

With two players coming into the Philadelphia Union via the MLS Superdraft, and Freddy Adu apparently headed out, the KYW Philly Soccer Show is here to make sense of it for you.

KYW’s Greg Orlandini is joined this week by co-host Eli Pearlman-Storch and special guest Dan Walsh, both of the Philly Soccer Page.

The Union was without a first-round pick in this year’s draft, but picked up forward Don Anding from Northeastern University and midfielder Stephen Okai, out of the University of Mobile.

Okai is more a known quantity, having played for the Union affiliate Reading United.

Union coach John Hackworth drops in to the show, not only to talk about the draft but to address reports of the possible departure of Freddy Adu. Hackworth confirms that the midfielder will not be in the team’s training camp and is not in the Union’s plans. (Approx 11:00 minutes in).

Hackworth says of Adu, “I’m not going to go into too much, I’ll address it on Monday—I know it’s a story out there. You know, Freddy is not coming into our preseason, he’s not in our plans. I will address it further on Monday at the press conference.”

The US International signed Adu to much fanfare in 2011, but his performance has disappointed.

  1. The show just seems to cut-off at the end. This there a second part which did not get posted?

I love your podcasts but there always seems to be technical difficulties with them. It seemed Dan was cut off in the middle of saying something. My player’s bar says it is about midway through, it was a little after someone made a point that we did see/scout Stephen Okai at Reading. Was there a second part that was not posted? This isn’t the first time I’ve had a problem with your podcast. Please find a way to fix the frequent problems because this is the best Union Podcast out there.
