Union decline option on Stahl

The Union announced on Friday that they have declined the option to renew midfielder Toni Stahl’s contract.

Stahl, a second round pick—17th overall—in the 2010 SuperDraft, started one game for the Union last year. He played 41 minutes in that game, the Union’s season opener against Seattle, before being sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Stahl’s only other appearances for the Union were in the US Open Cup match against the New York Red Bulls and in the friendlies against Celtic, Manchester United and Chivas de Guadalajara.

Stahl joined the Union from University of Connecticut where he earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2006. He was Big East Midfielder of the Year in 2009.

Before playing college soccer in the US, Stahl helped the HJK U-17 team win the 2001 and 2002 national championships in his native Finland.
